Xiaomi had a bit of good news to share today, announcing it has sold 15 million units of its MI2 smartphone series, up from the roughly 10 million units it had sold back in September. The Chinese smartphone company celebrated the news with a promotion, dropping the price on its MI2s device to celebrate the milestone.
The 8-megapixel MI2s with 16GB of storage now costs just $210 (down from $280). The new price drop doesn’t apply to
higher end versions of the MI2s however. A 32GB 13-megapixel variant is
holding steady at $290. Meanwhile, the newer M13 starts at $330—still a
great deal compared to the average smartphone in the U.S. and most of
the world.
Now Xiaomi has been expanding rapidly in China, but still hasn’t made any moves towards becoming a global
brand. The company poached Google’s Hugo Barra last year with plans to
push into new markets, but we haven’t heard much from the ex-Android
exec since then. We’re not expecting the first MI handset to launch in
the U.S. anytime soon.
